You Don't Have to Fix Every Feeling

You Don't Have to Fix Every Feeling

Kayanna Campana

Your child is sad.
So you try to cheer them up.

They're frustrated.
You immediately offer a solution.

They're nervous.
You tell them everything will be okay.

We do this because we care. We don't like seeing our children struggle.

But sometimes, our children don't need us to fix the feeling. They need us to be with them in it.

Feelings aren't problems that always need solutions

Imagine your child says:
"I didn't get invited to the party."

Our instinct might be:
"I'm sure there will be another party."

Or:
"You have lots of other friends."

Or:
"Don't worry about it."

But what if we simply said:
💬 "That really hurt."

Sometimes, being understood is more helpful than immediately being reassured.

Connection can come before problem-solving

Try:
💬 "I see you."
💬 "That was really hard."
💬 "I'm here."
💬 "You don't have to figure it all out right now."

You're not encouraging the child to stay upset. You're giving them permission to experience the emotion without feeling like they need to hide it.

Once the intensity comes down, they're often more ready to think about what comes next.

We can model this, too

Adults don't always need solutions either.

Sometimes we tell our children:
"I'm having a hard day."

and what we really want isn't someone to solve our entire day. We want someone to listen.

Children are learning from those experiences.

They're learning:
Feelings can be uncomfortable without being dangerous.
I don't have to make them disappear immediately.
Someone can be with me while I experience them.

Those are powerful lessons.

Support doesn't mean solving

Being emotionally supportive doesn't mean saying yes to everything. It doesn't mean removing every disappointment. It doesn't mean making sure your child never feels uncomfortable.

It means helping them develop the capacity to experience emotions and eventually navigate them.

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can say is simply:
💬 "I'm here. We can figure out what comes next when you're ready."

At All The Emotions, we believe emotional education isn't about eliminating difficult feelings.

It's about helping children understand that feelings are part of being human—and giving them tools to navigate those feelings safely.
