The Power of the Pause

The Power of the Pause

Kayanna Campana

There's a tiny moment between feeling something and doing something.

It might only last a few seconds.
But that little pause can be incredibly powerful.

Imagine your child is playing with a sibling. The sibling takes their toy.
Your child feels angry. Their body reacts.

They want to grab it back. Or yell. Or hit.
The feeling happens quickly.

But with practice, children can learn to create a little space before the reaction.

Pause → Slow → Choose 💡

Think of it as three steps.

PAUSE
Notice: "Whoa. I'm getting really mad."

SLOW
Give the body a chance to settle.

Take a breath.
Step away.
Relax your hands.
Get some space.

CHOOSE
Ask:
"What do I want to do next?"
Maybe it's using words.
Maybe it's asking for help.
Maybe it's taking a break.

Maybe it's deciding that walking away is the safest choice.

The pause isn't punishment

Sometimes "take a break" can sound like a consequence.

But a pause can be a skill.

We're not saying:
"Go away until you're calm."

We're teaching:
"Let's create some space so your body can slow down and you can figure out what you need."

That distinction matters.

Practice the pause before you need it

You don't want the first practice to happen during a huge emotional reaction. Practice when things are calm.

You might say:
💬 "Let's practice what a pause looks like."

Take a breath.
Put your hands down.
Notice your body.

Then ask:
💬 "What could I choose next?"

You can even practice with pretend scenarios:
"What would you do if someone cut in front of you?"
"What could you do if your sibling took your toy?"
"What could you do if you lost a game?"

The more familiar the process becomes, the easier it can be to access when emotions get bigger.

A pause doesn't guarantee a perfect choice

Your child might still make a mistake. That's okay.

The goal is to gradually increase the space between:
"I feel it." and "I act."

That space gives children an opportunity to make a choice.
And sometimes, that's where emotional strength begins.

At All The Emotions, we teach children practical strategies they can practice and use in real-life situations.
